Kate could not figure out w hy the school had put Nadia in a class where she could not understand what people were saying. ―Why did they do this?‖ Kate wondered aloud. ―I mean, you can’t learn if you can’t understand the teacher.‖ Nadia’s voice was a whisper (speaking in a very low voice). ―I understand English. I will learn.‖ Nadia’s English was perfect. Kate was perplexed. She couldn’t understand why Nadia did not like to speak. Then she realized that moving to a new country probably wasn’t the easiest thing to do. There were hundreds of unfamiliar and unusual things to learn – all at the same time. ―There’re a lot of new things to learn, huh?‖ said Kate. Nadia nodded rapidly. In a quiet voice she replied, ―Many things people say, I do not understand. I have been speaking English and Romanian all my life, but I do not know what some children are saying. For example, yesterday a boy asked if I could help him find the USB port on a thin black box he was carrying. Isn’t a port a place for ships? It made no sense to me.‖ ―Don’t worry.‖ said Kate. ―You’ll figure everything out in time. You see, that thin black box was a computer. A USB port is a place where you can connect other machines to a computer.‖ Nadia and Kate were quiet after that. They took notes while the teacher gave a maths lesson. To Kate’s surprise, Nadia put up her hand and offered to answer the questions at the blackboard. Nadia handled every question the teacher gave her. Some of the questions were really difficult, and no one understood what was going on except Nadia and the teacher. When the teacher said that Nadia answered everything correctly, the whole class clapped their hands. Now I would like to share with you my opinions on how to improve our listening in English. I think there is a lot we can do to improve our listening ability. Firstly, we need to do more practice. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. The more we listen to English, the better we’ll be able to understand it. And it’s a good idea to try to imitate

the speakers after listening. Secondly, a large vocabulary is fundamental to the improvement of our listening. Thus, we should read more English articles to enlarge our vocabulary and broaden our horizons. Thirdly, interest plays an important role in language learning. So we can listen to English songs or watch English movies to practise listening, which will be of great benefit. Last but not least, learn to take some notes quickly while listening to long texts. That’s all. Thank yo u. 听力原文 Text 1 W: You’ve worked abroad, yes? M: Yes, I worked in Mexico, but only for two years. Last year I went to Germany, but now I’m back in Spain. Text 2 W: The film starts at eight so you can be at my house at twenty to eight. M: How about making it twenty past seven? We need time to park the car. W: Ok. See you then. Text 3 W: Where were you yesterday afternoon? M: I was at Ken’s house. We didn’t go out because there was a baseball game on TV. Text 4 M: I’m glad to be home. W: Oh, my god! You’re completely wet! M: I gave up waiting for the bus and decided it would be quicker on foot. But it was raining heavily, and there’s never a taxi when you want one. W: Oh, poor guy! Text 5 W: How was the sports meeting? M: It was put off because of the bad weather. The notice said it would be held next Monday if the weather was fine. Text 6 W: Hello. Can I help you? M: Yes, please. I’m looking for a shirt to match a grey suit. W: Let me show you a few. How about this purple one? M: Oh, I don’t think so. It’s OK for a party, but I don’t think it’s proper for a job interview. W: Well, it comes in other colors, too. M: Actually, I prefer this one. Do you have it in light blue? W: Just a minute. What size are you? M: Medium. W: Here you are. M: It is great. Can I try it on? W: Certainly. The fitting rooms are over there. ( a few minutes later ) So, how do you like it? M: It’s a really nice shirt and it fits me very well. How much is it? W: It’s on sale, 20% discount, only ￡80. Would you like to pay in cash or by credit card? M: Well… I’m afraid it’s beyond my budget. Thank you, anyway. W: You’re welcome. Text 7 M: Hello. How are you?
- 11 -
W: Fine, thanks. And you? M: I’m fine, but I’ve got lots of homework to do tonight. W: Really? So why aren’t you at home studying? Where are you going? M: My computer is not working. I’m going to my cousin’s house to use hers. W: How far away is that? M: It’s a short journey on the bus. W: I live five minutes from here. Why don’t you come and use my computer? M: Are you sure? Don’t you need it this evening? W: No. I’ve finished all my homework for tomorrow. M: Have you? Even the maths homework? I can’t understand any of it! W: It’s quite easy really. I’ll help you. M: That’s kind of you. W: It’s all right. Come on. This way. Text 8 M: Do you watch that show every week? W: Yes. Did you like it? M: Not really. I don’t care much for soap operas. W: What kind of programs do you like? M: Well, I don’t watch much television, but I like news—programs with information for the audience. Soap operas are usually too confusing. W: I’d rather watch a soap. I don’t have to think about it. I want to be entertained. M: Frank takes after you. He watches more soap operas and TV movies than anybody I know. He says his job is so demanding that he doesn’t want to come home at night and think. W: I can understand that. M: Oh, I can, too. But I guess I like being both entertained and informed. For example, there was a program about Mexico on last week. On one hand, it showed beautiful pictures of different places around the country. And on the other hand, it gave information about tourism and travel costs. Neither soap operas nor TV movies offer me that. Text 9 M: Hey! Long time no see! How is everything? W: Life can be a pain in the neck sometimes. M: Why do you say that? W: I’ll have to pay an arm and a leg to have my MP4 player repaired. It will cost the same amount to buy a new one. What shall I do? M: Neither. W: But I can’t do without an MP4 player. M: Forget them. They’re ancient history. You should have a look at this one. It’s an iPad. You can store lots of songs, games and films on it and the quality is great. You like reading, right? W: Yeah. Why? M: You can download the books you like and read them whenever and wherever you want. It’s very convenient. W: Sounds great. I can’t wait to have one. M: You can get one from computer shops. But I bought mine from the net and had it delivered for free. In fact, I was given a 5% discount on my next purchase. You can use it if you like. W: Really? That’s kind of you. M: That’s OK. W: But what about my MP4 player? M: It’s easy. I know a second-hand market. Maybe you can fetch a good price.

W: Thanks for everything. M: Don’t mention it. Text 10 I’m often asked the question ―How did you become a journalist?‖ You see, everyone expected me to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a doctor. Well, during my last year of school I was given the opportunity to visit an advisor and I drove her crazy with my choices. My first choice was a chocolate tester. Although my advisor wasn’t in favor of this idea, she got me the information. I discovered that chocolate testers earn a lot of money, so I was sure I had found my dream job. However, when I found out that chocolate testers don’t just sit around eating chocolate all day, they are also involved in the marketing and promotion of the product. I finally gave it up. Next, I thought of becoming a football referee. I had loved football from a young age, but being a profess ional footballer was out of the question, as I couldn’t play well. Anyway, it seems that referees must be able to run 2.5 miles in less than twelve minutes and they are required to take exams throughout their training. On top of that, only after many years of experience –and if they are lucky –do they get the chance to referee big professional matches. So, my dream of showing David Beckham a red card disappeared. Finally, I had this perfect idea of becoming a dog stylist after I realized how much money our dog stylist was being paid. However, once, while she was styling our Philipo, I noticed he tried to bite her. As you can imagine, that really put me off. All this research made me realize I had a gift for collecting information, so I had decided to become a journalist.
